We were asked to support Arham at the start of Year 1. At that time he was reading at below expected level and lacked confidence. However, when he was given one-to-one support he quickly developed  a love for books and showed a natural ability to learn and a clear comprehension of the meaning of what he was reading. By the end of Year 1 he was reading at expected level. In the autumn of the next year, his mother offered to become one of our volunteers. She received our training and has become an invaluable and reliable member of the team. As her son began Year 2,
no longer receiving support from us, his progress briefly slowed. However, his mother used the knowledge from her Learn to Love to Read training, and our specific encouragement to visit the library regularly and ask for school books to be changed more frequently. Within a few weeks Arham’s progress accelerated again and he is now achieving above expected levels.

Arham's Mum says, "Arham feels happy when I take him to the library to choose his favourite books. He knows that if we read every day just for a few minutes it will have a good impact on him."

On becoming a volunteer, she says, "I feel a lot of good changes in me since becoming a volunteer. My sounding out and blending has improved, so I can help other children as well as my own. After seeing the children improve, I am encouraged to do more learning."
