P has three children aged five, three and one, and lives on an estate near Franciscan Children’s Centre in Tooting. P speaks English, her husband Urdu, and the children’s first language is English. She first heard about Learn to Love to Read through the children’s centre which was running L2L2R’s Early Years classes in conjunction with its own Fantastic Twos sessions. P attended three out of a set of four Early Years classes with her three year-old daughter.

Reading is very important to P and her children read every day as part of their routine. P really enjoyed the sessions saying that “they were very interactive and involved the adults,” unlike some classes where the children are expected to sit.

P felt that the routine of the classes and having the same leader at every session helped her child to gain confidence as she doesn’t usually interact much or speak to unfamiliar people. P was quite surprised and pleased when in the last week, her daughter answered a question about the book she was looking at when asked by the class leader.

P thought the resources (books, puzzles and song cards given out at each session) were excellent and her daughter “was very happy that she could keep the books,” instead of having to return them to the library as usual. Her daughter was excited about the song cards, taking them home to show her older brother and telling him it was her homework.

P would really recommend the classes and has been telling some of her friends about them already. She comments that she felt the class leader “was very patient and involved all of the children.”

“Don’t stop,” she says, “they are great!”
